Budapest
'The queen of the Danube', this is how Hungarian residents affectionately call their capital Budapest. And yes the city does have a royal charisma. Not only the sublime location along the 'schönen blauen Donau', but also the numerous monumental buildings, the large squares and the beautiful parks give the city a certain majesty.
In 1873 the three former towns of Buda, Pest and Óboeda became one city: Budapest. Remarkebly before Budapest was officially formed these towns were referred to as Pest-Buda since Pest was by far the largest of the three towns. Pest, situated on the eastern shore of the Danube, is nowadays the business center of the city. The Hungarian parliament, for many habitants the national symbol of their republic, can be found on this side of the river as well. The neo-gothic parliament was built in 1902 and has a striking appearance with its 2 big and 20 small towers and a total of 242 historical statues on its façade. There is a possibility to take guided tours through the parliament as well, during which visitors can admire beautifully decorated staircases and impressive chambers with various frescos and ceilingmosaics.
Buda, the green hilly part of the city on the other side of the river, is connected to Pest by 11 bridges. Visitors can enjoy great views across Buda, the Danube and the lower situated Pest from the 235 meter high citadel of Buda. Various museums can be found in this castle, which was built in the 13 th century, such as the History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Ludwig Museum.
Other sights in Budapest include the Állatkert Zoo, the 30 kilometer long cavesystem under the city,   the famous thermal baths, the Great Market Hall, St. Stephen's basilica and the Vidám Park. The Great Market Hall is the largest covered market of Budapest and draws annually many tourists, who especially seem to come for the decorated eggs and the different sorts of peppers. St. Stephen's basilica dominates Pest's skyline with its 96 meter high dome and two 80 meter high towers. The basilica, which was named after the first king of Hungary, seats more than 8000 worshipers and is one of the largets churches in the world. The main draws of the basilica are the numerous statues and mosaics, and the right hand of St. Stephen which is considered to be a holy relic. The Vidám Park is an amusement park with more than 30 modern attractions. The wooden roller coaster Hullámvasút from 1926 is a local favourite and just a ride in this old attraction makes its worthwhile to visit Budapest.
